The Christmas break is an excellent opportunity to gather your thoughts and set goals for the year ahead. Have you considered standing for council?

There’s an election next year.

There are two types of councillor.

The city is divided into three wards – Mount/Papamoa, Te Papa/Welcome Bay and Otumoetai/Pyes  Pa – with two councillors elected by each ward to represent those communities on council.

There are four more councillors elected ‘at-large’ across the entire city.

Both ward and ‘at-large’ councillors swear an oath to act in the best interests of the whole city, regardless of how they’re elected.

Both types of councillor should work full-time on council.

You’re paid a full-time wage and the community expects you to work as such. Ward councillors, in general, tend to get more requests from residents as they identify with a specific community.
