Scholars Baroque Aotearoa’s annual concert of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ returns this month, set to captivate many who devour it as a seasonal tradition.

Together with NZBarok Orchestra, Scholars Baroque offers two performances – at Mount Maunganui on November 25, and Waihi on November 26.

Musical director Chalium Poppy says the ensemble of exceptionally talented artists and choir will deliver an engaging rendition of Handel’s ‘Messiah’. “What we seek to do is to create a sound as close to that of Handel’s original 18th Century sound.”

And while some enjoy the performance as an annual festive tradition, others will just come for the lovely music, Chalium hopes it transport the audience to another place.

“You know, it’s a troubling time for the world. I know people come to concerts as a way to feel at peace, and I hope these performances bring that feeling to our audiences.

‘Handel’s Messiah’ has a beautiful message, so I hope people will find comfort in it. In fact, the first word heard after the overture is ‘comfort’.”

This year an incredible line-up of soloists will lend their voices to the iconic composition. “Expect ethereal notes of Australian soprano Greta Claringbould, the mesmerising sound of countertenor Coco Diaz from Europe, the clear and strong tenor performance by Jeandré Le Roux, and the resonant bass of James Harrison.”

Plus, it could be scholarship holders Riya Behere and David Jiang’s last time performing in the choir. “I’ve seen Riya grow and blossom into an amazing young singer; now she’s preparing for her final diploma in voice.

“David, of Bethlehem College, also tutored by me, is preparing for his final diploma in piano performance.

“Riya intends to head to Auckland next year to further her studies, and David – has another couple years at college.”

Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is at St Thomas More Church from 7.30pm Saturday, November 25; and at Waihi Memorial Hall from 2.30pm Sunday, November 26. See the advert for ticket details.
