A Pāpāmoa food trailer is turning a beloved Kiwi treat into a force for good during May, with a special donut created to support Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.

OMG! Decadent Donuts owner Aleesha Goudie has launched a limited-edition “Chocky Fish” donut, with proceeds going to Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand – a cause close to her heart.

Goudie’s young niece, who lives with cystic fibrosis, was the inspiration behind the initiative.

“She’s just turned 3 and has had a really happy, healthy start to life,” Goudie said. “But it’s something her family has to think about every day. It changes everything.”

Wanting to make a meaningful contribution, Goudie combined a long-held idea for a chocolate fish-inspired donut with the timing of Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.

Chocolate fish have become a symbol within the cystic fibrosis community.

“It just felt like the perfect opportunity to turn something fun into a fundraiser,” Goudie said. “It’s a great cause for us to support because it’s so close to our family.”

The Chocky Fish donut blends existing flavours – strawberry and vanilla with cacao and sea salt – to recreate the nostalgic taste of the classic chocolate fish. While the donut itself remains round, the flavour captures the familiar combination of chocolate and marshmallow.

Throughout May, customers can buy a six-pack of the special donuts, with $5 from each box donated to Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand. There will also be an option to support the cause with a gold coin donation in exchange for a chocolate fish.

Goudie said community fundraising is a big part of what her business stands for.

“I really love the local, community vibe. We’ve done fundraisers before, and it’s amazing what people will get behind when it means something.”

Her connection with Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand is already growing, with plans to link with local families and support the community beyond May.

Goudie said the fundraiser reflected the inclusive philosophy behind OMG! Decadent Donuts – a business built around making treats everyone can enjoy. The donuts are vegan, gluten-free and made without many common allergens, allowing more people to indulge without worry.

“We want people to feel like they don’t have to miss out,” she said. “And if we can do that while also giving back, that’s even better.”

The Chocky Fish donuts are available throughout May at the OMG! Decadent Donuts trailer at 1 Enterprise Drive, Pāpāmoa.
