Astronauts, aliens, cosmic creatures, a flock of sheep and a Champagne Supernova came together under one roof this month for an unforgettable evening to raise funds for Pongakawa School.

The school’s annual Quiz Night on June 6, themed ‘A Night Amongst the Stars’, attracted 256 participants, 40 sponsors and 30-odd volunteers.

Event coordinator Jess Siemelink said final figures were unconfirmed but the quiz night had raised more than $60,000.

“Every dollar raised will go towards upgrades and maintenance of the school’s senior playground, helping create a safer, more enjoyable space for our students for years to come.”

The school’s Action Centre became a celestial wonderland – with a giant glowing moon, moon rover buggies and rocket ship – offering a night of fun and fundraising.

Guests were encouraged to dress in costume – Best Dressed team went to The Big Bang Gang, second was Burtonesque and third Sofa King Smart.

“The effort put into costumes was nothing short of incredible, with guests bringing plenty of creativity and enthusiasm,” Siemelink said.

The Trivia Newton John team won the quiz, Champagne Supernova placed second and Istari third.

Siemelink said 32 tables of guests enjoyed a space-inspired dining experience – the menu’s highlight being Cosmic Ramen with pork belly.

This year 14 live auctions raised more than $24,000 and 82 silent auctions netted $10,000-plus.

Siemelink said using the GalaBid platform meant guests bid on their phones – even from home.

“The live auction delivered plenty of laughs and remarkable generosity from our community.”

Siemelink said she and fellow event coordinator Belinda Jones were supported by several hard-working teams “whose commitment ensured the evening’s success”.

“To every volunteer, sponsor, donor, business and community member who contributed in any way, thank you. Your generosity, time and support continue to make a real difference for our school.”

A special thank you went to 2026 naming rights sponsor WaterOne (Trenching & Irrigation).
