A richly expressive evening of French elegance awaits those at Scholars Baroque Aotearoa’s upcoming concert on August 8 at Mount Maunganui.

The event highlights Fauré’s beloved Requiem, said conductor Chalium Poppy, who noted the choir is excited to bring this cherished work back to local stages.

“Fauré’s Requiem connects beautifully with singers and audiences,” Poppy said.

“Past performances were described as breathtaking, and we aim to capture that same serenity.”

In contrast, the choir will perform Charpentier’s radiant Te Deum, a hallmark of French Baroque.

“The Te Deum brings grand, majestic brilliance and intricate choral writing,” Poppy said. “It captures the splendour of 17th-century France.”

The choir will be led by Poppy, joined by tenor soloist Iain Tetley and featured ensemble soloists.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for several of our own choristers to step into the spotlight as featured soloists,” Poppy said.

“I find it immensely rewarding to present a programme that highlights the exceptional vocal talent we have within our ranks, allowing audiences to truly marvel at the magnificent, colourful textures of the French Baroque style.

“The programme also features distinguished musician Dr Jonathan Dunlop on the organ.

“He is highly regarded for his mastery of historic keyboard instruments, and we are delighted to have his expertise anchoring our performance.”

Scholars Baroque Aotearoa’s concert of Fauré’s Requiem and Charpentier’s Te Deum is on August 8 from 7.30pm at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Mount Maunganui. A second concert will be held at Hamilton’s St Peter’s Cathedral on August 9 at 2.30pm. Purchase tickets online at: www.scholarsbaroque.com
