Work will start next week on a $576,000 project to renew sections of the rock seawall at Katikati’s MacMillan Reserve.

According to Western Bay of Plenty District Council, the exisiting seawall had deteriorated over time.

The new sections of the seawall would be designed and constructed to modern best-practice standards, helping protect the surrounding coastline for future generations, the council said.

The work was scheduled to start on Monday, September 14, and was expected to take six to eight weeks, depending on weather and tidal conditions.

Due to the movement of trucks, machinery and heavy rock materials, the reserve, footpath and half of the carpark would be closed during working hours – from 7am to 6pm weekdays, excluding public holidays.

The two freedom camping parks would be completely closed for the duration of the work; however, the boat ramp would remain open.

Council reserves and facilities assets manager Janine Field said that to keep everyone safe, the site would be securely fenced and clearly signposted, with traffic and pedestrian management in place. People were asked to follow temporary access restrictions and take care around the work site.

“MacMillan Reserve is an important space for the Katikati community, so it’s important we invest in protecting it for the future.

“Renewing the seawall will provide stronger coastal protection and help ensure the reserve can continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of reserve users and neighbouring residents while this work is happening.”
