They're busy little beavers, collecting firewood, chopping it down and cutting up trees ready to sell to the community.

Throughout the year, Tauranga City Sunrise Lions Club has been filling their depo with fire wood to sell two cubic metres of firewood to each resident preparing for the colder months, which will be donated to non-profit organisations.

Club organiser Ken Evans says this week they donated $1000 to the Tauranga foodbank, which will be used to buy non-perishable food for families and people in need in the region.

Ken says: 'The basis of the Lion's Club is just two words - we serve - so we've got a club of about 17 members and our aim is to make our community better.

'Each year the Foodbank is one of our key charities we donate to. We also get tremendous support from a range of companies who chop down trees for people in the city.”

Now, halfway through the year, the club has raised $10,000, which they will distribute amongst organisations like Homes of Hope and Red Cross.

'We would like to thank everyone who has helped out with the process,” says Ken, 'and we encourage people to order their fire wood, get it in their sheds now and get it drying.”

The Sunrise group are always looking for new members for the club. They meet from 6-8am every first and third Tuesday of the month.
