Papamoa's Double Teaspoons café doubled down on their fundraising efforts for the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day last Friday.

The café has run Daffodil Day fundraisers before, with gold coin donations from their coffee sales. In 2019 they raised $836 and in 2020 they raised $1180.

Missing out on fundraising last August due to a Covid lockdown, the café wanted to go the extra mile this year. 'We did full price items for everything – but everything that we made on the day went to the Cancer Society,” says owner and operator May Lau. 'It wasn't profits, it was sales and we ended up making $3540 – so it was a really good effort.”

However, initially it was a rocky start getting the fundraising efforts of the ground. 'It was funny because I thought I had enough staff on and then things changed – my chef was isolating for Covid and then a couple of other volunteers pulled out,” says May. 'But then we ended up getting enough people to work on the day.” Phew! 'It's different to an everyday work day – all the staff had lots of fun and we had lots of fun decorating,” says May.

She supports Daffodil Day because she feels everybody knows someone who has cancer or has had it. 'So many people are affected by it, whether you've got cancer yourself or your family or your friends,” says May. 'I do think with Covid and everything, a lot of the charities have been forgotten in a way. You always have to give back to the community in some way – that's how I feel as a business owner anyway.”

The café's Daffodil Day was a hit. 'Everybody loved it and there was a lot of generous people…it was wasn't just staff and myself – it was customers as well,” says May. 'Everyone got involved and it was just marvelous!”
