Tauranga residents wondering why four Pōhutukawa trees were being uprooted from Graham Park can be relieved in knowing they are a going to serve a greater purpose at their new homes around the city.

Tauranga City Council parks and recreation manager Warren Aitken says council has been growing the Pōhutukawa trees at the city park for the purpose of replanting them in other city spaces – where larger trees are needed for improving shade and the appearance of an area.

'There are around 35-40 trees still on-site that have potential for future use around the city, but some of these may end up staying at the site as they are still performing a function in their current location and may not be suitable for transplanting,” says Warren.

The Pōhutukawa trees recently removed are being transplanted and used for the Elizabeth Street Upgrade. They will also be used for the reserve located between Zespri and the Mount Maunganui Library on Maunganui Rd.

'We may continue to use the [Graham Park] area in the same way going forward, as it's a great way to provide large grade trees in areas where they provide instant impact and shade,” says Warren.
