D’Arcy meets Darcy

Anna D’Arcy with Colin Firth aka Mr Darcy

Anna D'Arcy wore the red dress the day she met Colin Firth – aka Mr Darcy – and no, the irony of the names wasn't lost on her.

'There were obviously a few jokes because my maiden name is D'Arcy and he's Darcy,” says Anna.

And now, Anna Woolfrey – née D'Arcy – is selling the dress that has touched and been touched by Mr Darcy – himself. For only $20.

'He was really, really sweet. It's definitely next to him, he definitely has his hands on the dress – but, yes, sadly it has been washed.”

A dress with a story – of international travel, success, winning and of meeting famous movie stars.

Anna wore the red dress the day she won United Kingdom's Campaigner of the Year prize for her scheme Green Impact in 2008.

Colin Firth and his wife were there as well and were both judges for the awards.

Green Impact is an environment and accreditation scheme in students unions and other workplaces in the UK and European Union involving more seven million people. Last year the scheme clocked up 70,000 pro-environmental actions alone, and last week it was awarded a UNESCO Laureate prize from the United Nations.

The Brookfield mother-of-four turned to Facebook to sell the bombshell red dress for a good reason.

'The motivation to sell it was that it's the school holidays and I have four children, two of whom are twin toddlers.”

'We're having a clear-out to raise funds to try and get through the school holidays like lots of parents, lots of families out there.”

'I had ummed and ahhhed about it before, and again I've got younger toddlers so I don't go out or wear the dress and a thing of beauty should be seen.”

'It's a lovely dress and a lovely bag, also for sale and made of chocolate wrappers, and they're just sat in my cupboard and I haven't worn them in over four years, and I just thought: ‘If I keep it for too much longer it'll look unfashionable' and I felt like it should be seen and be worn. I need to let it go.”

And the win wasn't first soiree Anna had with fame and awards.

'I was nominated in 2007 and I didn't win but I was shortlisted. I came second to Al Gore, but I actually got lots of press coverage in the UK that year. At the time I only had two kids and it was ‘mum-of-two from the North of England up against the vice president of America'.

'And the second year that I actually won it, I didn't get as much press coverage. I think the big story was ‘mum up against Al Gore'.”

Despite the red dress' fame, it's still up for grabs, says Anna.

'It's a really lovely dress; it's a size 10 but it's a comfy size 10 and it sits really well. It hides all sorts of lumps and bumps.”

'It's one of those dresses that I think would make anybody look good.”
