For many older people in Tauranga, asking for help starts with a simple statement: “I need some help with food”.
Super Support social worker Melissa Laurent said food assistance provides immediate relief, but it can also be the first step towards wider support.
“Super Support brings together a network of local organisations to provide older people with wraparound support and services.
“Rather than navigating multiple services or repeatedly sharing their story, people are connected with the right support while organisations coordinate behind the scenes to ensure their needs are met.”
Tauranga Community Foodbank manager Nicki Goodwin said that during the past 12 months, 1085 food parcels had been provided to 251 households primarily reliant on New Zealand Superannuation.
“This represented 13% of all food support provided,” Laurent said. “Of these, 827 deliveries went to couples or people living alone who are connected with Super Support because they could not afford to put food on the table.”
Goodwin said the number of deliveries for Super Support increased by 59% compared with the previous year.
“When rent, power and essential bills are paid, groceries can become the only expense left to cut. An unexpected car repair, medical bill or rent increase can quickly push a tight budget beyond its limits.”
