The Bay of Plenty Climbing Association has been given a $10,000 grant for the purchase of critical outdoor climbing safety gear.
BOPSCA will also use the grant from the New Zealand Community Trust to expand its outdoor programmes and meet growing demand.
“This investment will directly benefit our members and the wider Bay of Plenty community by making the thrill and challenge of outdoor climbing safer and more accessible than ever before,” said treasurer Jaron Faber.
“With the right equipment, we can encourage more people – especially young climbers and newcomers, to experience climbing safely and sustainably.”
BOPSCA estimated up to 200 people will benefit directly from the new gear in the next year, with wider positive impacts across the Bay of Plenty.
“This new gear makes it super easy to get into more outdoor climbing with my friends,” said Cara Hicks, 16, youth member and national climbing competitor.
“In the past, sometimes I had to wait a long time for a go. I can’t wait for our next trip.”
Volunteer Corey Hinde added, “Having reliable club equipment takes a huge weight off our shoulders as volunteers and as parents. We know everyone is climbing on safe, well-maintained gear.”
NZCT’s grants, marketing and communications general manager Ben Hodges said, “Climbing is an exciting and growing sport for young people. We’re delighted to help the association gear up. Our support wouldn’t be possible without the responsible gaming fundraising partnerships we share with our local venues in the Bay of Plenty.”
BOPSCA is based at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui, and is home to New Zealand’s only Olympic-sized speed wall.
The club hosts the annual Speed Nationals and supports athletes competing nationally and internationally, including at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
