Tauranga’s Frocks on Bikes is putting a colourful spin on fundraising this weekend, with riders encouraged to dress themselves and their bikes in yellow for a Daffodil Day ride.
The group will set off from BestStart Montessori Bethlehem on Te Paeroa Rd on Saturday, August 22, meeting at 9.45am for a 10am start.
Co-leader Rachel Blennerhassett said the 12km ride will be a little easier than some of the group’s previous outings, making it a good opportunity for regular riders and newcomers to join in.
“The route will head down Carmichael Rd and through the wetlands trails before crossing Carmichael Rd and continuing towards Waihi Rd.
“Riders will then travel through more trails and quiet suburban roads towards Castlewold Drive before making their way to Moffat Rd and the coffee stop at Bloom Cafe inside Decor Gardenworld.”
After time for refreshments and a chat, the group will cycle back to BestStart Bethlehem Montessori.

The ride will raise money for the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day appeal.
Blennerhassett encouraged riders to bring cash for a donation or contribute through the group’s online fundraising page. “Pretty up your bike, wear yellow yourself,” she said. “You can donate even if you can’t make the ride.”
People wanting to join the ride were asked to RSVP through the Frocks on Bikes Facebook event, or email: frocksonbikes.tauranga@gmail.com.
Donations can be made on the Frocks on Bikes Daffodil Day fundraising page even if people are unable to take part in the ride.
Led by Blennerhassett, Laura Ning, Katy Freeman, Andy Johns and Kelly Collis, Frocks on Bikes is all about making cycling accessible and enjoyable.
The community group has been quietly building momentum since it launched locally in 2010. Today it offers regular rides, social outings and a supportive environment for riders of all abilities.
Rides are held monthly, alternating between Saturdays and Sundays, and usually run for two to three hours, including a cafe stop.
“Let’s all get behind Daffodil Day,” Blennerhassett said. “It’s sadly true that we are all affected by cancer in some way, whether our own battle or the battle of a family member or friend.”
