Squash Bay of Plenty has cemented its status as the nation’s powerhouse after both its men’s and women’s representative teams swept to national titles at the New Zealand District Teams Championships.

The prestigious annual tournament, held in Hawke’s Bay last weekend, brought together 10 districts from around the country and featured many of New Zealand’s leading players competing for national honours.

The Bay of Plenty women’s team continued their remarkable reign, securing the national championship for the ninth consecutive year, Squash Bay of Plenty said.

The side were unbeaten throughout the tournament, recording commanding 4-0 victories over Waikato, Wellington and Canterbury on their way to another title.

The championship-winning women’s team featured Ella Hill, Emma Merson, Brooke Valios, Jaclyn Kemp and Winona Jo-Joyce.

Not to be outdone, the Bay of Plenty men’s team produced an equally impressive performance to capture the national crown.

The side opened with a dominant 4-0 win over Midlands before defeating Central 3-1 and Wellington 3-1 to complete an outstanding campaign and secure a memorable championship double for the region.

The victorious men’s team consisted of Alex Oakley, Vihan Chathury, Glenn Templeton, Jack Oliver and Taylor Harris.

The dual success reflects the strength of the squash pathway that has been developed across the Bay of Plenty, from grassroots club programmes and volunteer support through to junior development, performance squads and elite training environments.

Bay of Plenty Squash officials said the achievements were the result of years of investment in player development and a strong sporting culture throughout the region.

“The systems, development opportunities and culture that have been built over many years continue to produce players capable of competing with the very best in New Zealand.”

A key contributor to that success has been coaching director Robbie Wyatt, whose leadership has helped drive the region’s sustained growth and competitive success.

Officials said the latest national titles were a reflection not only of the players’ performances on court, but also of the wider squash community that continues to support and develop the sport throughout the Bay of Plenty.
