At the heart of Tauranga’s Young at Heart Festival this week are plenty of events focused on being healthy in body and mind.

Lunchtime chair exercises in Papamoa Library, connecting with others through circus, and learning about wellness online are just some of the health-related activities being offered.

Running until October 8, and celebrating Wednesday’s International Day of Older Persons, the festival has plenty of free events for people to dive into around wellbeing and enjoying the outdoors.

On offer is a guided walk in l’Anson Reserve in Te Puna and the opportunity to have a go at badminton and pickleball at the Mount Sports Centre. Or what about attending a two-hour Living a Longer Life symposium at Tauranga Library and trying Pilates and healing teas?

Envirohub project co-ordinator Rachael Pratt said this year’s theme, Wise by Nature, encouraged thoughtful, everyday choices that supported personal wellbeing, strengthening communities, and protecting the planet.

“Through engaging activities and meaningful moments, the festival promotes a sustainable and connected way of living.”

Walking basketball, tai chi, Aqua Deep, AquaFit and Senior Swans Ballet are all designed to be “have-a-go” sessions with low impact.

There is a full body workout designed to increase strength, fitness and mobility, where the class typically begins with cardio, followed by strength and a full body stretch.

And for those who want something less active but fun, there is a joyful Saturday morning laughter session, designed to boost mood, reduce stress, and foster community through playful, therapeutic laughter.
