Give the best gift possible this Christmas

SPCA is calling on New Zealanders to give the ultimate Christmas present this year – the gift of safety, healing and a second chance for animals in need.

Every day SPCA rescues and cares for thousands of sick, injured and vulnerable animals – and at Christmas, the need is greater than ever.

Among these animals is Maverick, a tiny puppy whose life changed thanks to the kindness of Kiwis.

When Maverick arrived at SPCA, he was trembling in fear, with his tail tucked tightly between his legs.

A rough playtime accident with a larger dog had left him with devastating injuries. His face was torn open and a deep bite wound threatened his survival. Emergency surgery was the only way to save him.

“Maverick’s family loved him, but they couldn’t afford the urgent vet care he needed,” SPCA chief executive Todd Westwood.

“They made the heartbreaking decision to surrender him to SPCA so he could have a chance at life.”

Thanks to generous donations, SPCA’s veterinary team acted fast. Maverick’s wounds were stitched, his pain eased and his future secured.

Today, his quirky smile – complete with a little “snaggle lip” – is more than a scar. It’s a badge of courage and a symbol of kindness.

“We are so grateful for the generous support from Kiwis every day. Making a donation this Christmas, no matter how big or small, will help more animals like Maverick receive lifesaving care and find safe, loving homes,” Westwood said.

“Every animal deserves a happy ending. Your support ensures that injured, abandoned and neglected animals receive expert care and the chance to live with joy and wonder.”
