Tauranga is about to get a little more magical, as Tauranga Musical Theatre (TMT) brings the global phenomenon Wicked to Baycourt Community and Arts Centre from September 17 to October 3.

Following acclaimed productions of Matilda, Les Misérables and Jersey Boys, TMT’s latest large-scale production promises to showcase the depth of musical theatre talent in our city.

At the heart of Wicked is the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, the powerful and misunderstood young woman, and Galinda, the popular and sparkling social star.

Ashleen Fahy and Morgan Kitching take on the principal roles, with Fletcher Oxford returning to Tauranga as Fiyero following more than 1000 performances at Universal Studios.

Director David Adkins said the musical’s themes were as relevant as ever.

“This globally beloved and monumentally popular musical ... is a story about identity, friendship, acceptance of difference and challenging narratives.”

Almost 100 performers auditioned, with Adkins adding, “The standard was very high, meaning we have a cast of the very highest calibre”.

The production is also a celebration of community commitment.

TMT president Keegan Millar said, “It takes a village to get these incredible shows into Baycourt”, with more than 130 volunteers contributing across the cast, crew, orchestra and production teams.

With its spectacular staging, memorable score and songs including Defying Gravity and Popular, Wicked is set to be one of Tauranga’s theatrical highlights of 2026 and a fitting celebration of the remarkable talent found right here at home. Tickets are on sale now at Eventfinda.
