When Colleen Wharry-Schumacher discovered a walnut-sized lump in her breast earlier this year, she had no idea how much life was about to change.
After scans and biopsies, she was diagnosed with a rare form of triple-positive breast cancer and, after beginning treatment in Australia, returned to Tauranga where she connected with Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust (BCSSTT).
As her treatment progressed, the support she received became invaluable.
“There was always someone willing to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or simply check in and ask how I was doing,” Wharry-Schumacher said.
From practical assistance and nourishing meals to support groups and specialised therapies, she found comfort in knowing she wasn’t facing breast cancer alone.
Stories like Wharry-Schumacher’s were why thousands of people were taking part in the 2026 Hot Pink Walk on October 28, said BCSSTT fundraising co-ordinator Tracey Phizacklea.
“The annual event brings together families, friends, workplaces and community groups, all helping raise vital funds for local breast cancer support services.”
Phizacklea said the 3km walk through Tauranga’s city centre was a vibrant community event, with entertainment hotspots, plenty of pink, and a positive atmosphere along the route.
“Every step helps raise vital funds so local people and whānau affected by breast cancer can access the support they need.”
As an independent local charity, BCSSTT ensures every dollar raised stays in the Western Bay of Plenty, supporting people and whānau affected by breast cancer.
Wharry-Schumacher said BCSSTT gave her connection, compassion “and a safe place to land when things became overwhelming”.
The 2026 Hot Pink Walk is on Wednesday, October 28, from 5pm on the waterfront on The Strand, in Tauranga CBD.
Tickets cost $10 per person aged 13-plus, $5 per child, and under-3s are free.
Hot Pink Walk tickets are for sale at any Z Energy station or online at www.hotpinkwalk.co.nz.
